Cost of Living

The cost of living in Sydney as a student depends a lot on the lifestyle you lead. The Australian Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) recommends that international students budget for $18,610 AU per year (minimum as at 1 July 2012). This is estimated to cover costs such as accommodation, food, education resources, basic entertainment and public transport.

Some basic estimates of costs per week may be:

  • Homestay (includes most meals, bills and accommodation) $110 – $270, depending on boarding arrangements
  • Shared rental $70 - $250
  • Transport $10 – $45, full time students are eligible for a Concession Opal card (max. $7.50 per day & $2.50 on Sundays)
  • Groceries and eating out for one is usually $80 – $200
  • Mobile phone & Internet $20- $50
  • Entertainment $50 – $100, depending on your personal lifestyle and choice
