The Aims of General EnglishOur General English courses cater for those who wish to improve their English communication skills for work, international travel and further study. Our teachers use a combination of resources and teaching techniques which target the specific needs of each group of students. Teaching Methodology and MaterialsGeneral English is taught using the communicative approach, where students are encouraged to be active participants in the classroom. The syllabus is based on the very latest ESL materials and text books, with the use of supplementary materials gathered from a wide range of sources including newspapers, magazines, films, radio and the internet. Our teachers adapt many of these authentic materials to suit the level and characteristics of each particular class. Task-based learning also features in the programme, which means learners are actively involved in improving their English skills whilst working cooperatively with other students to acquire new knowledge in their areas of interest. All General English students have 2 morning classes for the main syllabus, and an afternoon class where the four skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening are developed. Course length ranges from 5 to 56 weeks full-time for those on student visas (20 hours face-to-face plus 5 optional hours of supervised guided individual learning).
